This years work in a week (YWIW) is taking place

at Newcastle Racecourse 11 - 13 July

 

During this "year’s worth of work in a week", we will be using the outputs from our Drainage and Wastewater Management plan (DWMP) to help us to develop a smart network for the Marske catchment in collaboration with ESRI UK. 

 

Each catchment has its own unique characteristic and we are considering how to develop a tool box of solutions based on Marske to maximise the existing infrastructure by changing how flows are controlled. This will explore using nature based solutions, real time control, sensors, exploring storm water harvesting for the benefit of our customers and consider how we represent this spatially to maximise performance. 

  1. Map the use cases for how NWG staff could use a real time digital twin to operate the network in a Smart way in all weather conditions to improve performance metrics. (As a wastewater plant operator I want to ensure that all the sewage treatment works and pumping stations are prepared for the anticipated flows. As a technical advisor I want to ensure that no customers should suffer any internal or external flooding  to their property. As regulations manager I want to ensure that we are  compliant with all of our legal permit conditions.
  2. Estimate the value (CAPEX and OPEX) and benefits to storm overflow reduction plan from applying the different toolbox of solutions. Value will be ascribed to each use case, based on those that NWG staff judge as the most important.
  3. Assess the feasibility and technical / economic viability of using this new approach to operating sewer network.
